Snorkelling

Down below the surface of the ocean is a world of wonders land-lovers never see. Oceans cover more than 70% of the earth’s surface, which is a lot of territory that goes unexplored – unless you dive into it.

Whether you’re already an avid diver (or learning to scuba dive is something on your bucket list), there are plenty of great dive sites around the world where clouds of colourful fish bob and weave in unison in a sort of underwater ballet, stealthy sharks glide effortlessly around you, and sunken ships hold the promise of undiscovered treasure. What’s more? If you’re a Destination M member, you have a private residence in three tropical locations near waters that are renowned for great diving.

Kauai

The island of Kauai is the oldest in the Hawaiian chain, and its reefs have had millennia to develop rich eco-systems that attract incredible sea creatures. Soft colourful corals, giant sea turtles, humpback whales and manta rays are easily spotted on most every dive. South shore sites like Koloa Landing offer incredible views of underwater volcanic activity and giant schools of brilliant blue striped snapper fish.

The Big Island, Hawaii

Home to what many savvy divers consider to be two of the best dive sites on the planet, the big island of Hawaii is a major draw for scuba enthusiasts from around the world. Pelagic Magic and Manta Ray Night Dive are thrilling sites for night diving, where divers are surrounded by an ocean full of glowing fish. Naia (which means Dolphin in Hawaiian) is usually well populated with its namesake creature, and Suck ’em Up Lava Tube is an underwater lava cavern where, if you time it right, you’ll be sucked out of end of the tube by the ocean surge.

Costa Rica

The west coast of Costa Rica is the best for diving, and thanks to its nutrient rich waters, the experience there can be quite magical. The country’s clear waters offer visibility from 30 to 100 feet below, and the Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge is considered one of the most picturesque. It’s coral reefs, inlets and little bays are a favorite among small marine life. Sea turtles nest there from March through July, and manatees, dolphins and crocodiles all call the refuge home.

Do some research before your trip to find a reputable dive company for quality gear, properly trained staff and reliable dive boats. Safety comes first in scuba diving, so make sure you’re dealing with experts!
